At Paton & Martin, our aim is to 
provide new graduates with
 a strong foundation for their
 future careers. Interns rotate between hospital and ambulatory services every two weeks.

Interships are available to recent veterinary graduates seeking comprehensive experience in an equine ambulatory clinic and a full-service hospital. As an intern, you will gain invaluable expertise in the field working alongside highly regarded veterinarians, sports medicine specialists and surgical staff.

Start Date: June 1st

Internship Benefits:

  • Salary: $30 000 CAD

Paton & Martin Veterinary Services is located in the urban-rural environment of Aldergrove, British Columbia, south of Vancouver. Our practice offers both ambulatory and in-hospital services to our clientele. We service primarily sport horses (from a variety of disciplines) as well as recreational horses. We conduct over 750 lameness exams, more than 800 dental exams, and approximately 150 surgeries per year. We also provide general practice services to the horse community as well as reproductive services.

There are currently 3 full-time ambulatory veterinarians, 1 board-certified surgeon and 2 interns working for our practice. A board-certified internist, a board-certified ophthalmologist and a board-certified theriogenologist are also available for consultation.

Facilities include a full-service hospital with treatment areas and a 900 square foot surgical suite.

Hospital Internship Duties:

  • Primary care of hospitalized patients
  • Aiding in assessment and development of treatment plans for hospitalized patients
  • Assisting with surgeries
  • Accompanying the surgeon on farm calls
  • Aneasthesia: Induction and maintenance
  • Assisting with emergency care and farm emergencies on weekends
  • Processing patient records and billing
  • Ambulatory Internship Duties:
  • Assisting veterinarians on farm calls and aiding in the assessment and development of therapy plans
  • Assisting with farm emergencies during the week
  • Processing patient records and billing

Internship Application Requirements:

  • Current Resume
  • Letter indicating your areas of interest and reasons for seeking this internship position
  • 3 letters of recommendation from faculty or supervising veterinarians
  • Graduation from an Accredited Veterinary School
  • Successful completion of the NEB
  • Completion of an externship is recommended, but not required

Externship

Our goal for the externship 
program is to provide
 veterinary students with the
 experience of working in an equine ambulatory and surgical practice and to help students determine their future career goals.

Veterinary students of all years may apply; however, priority will be given to those in their 3rd and final years. We will be accepting externs between April and October, November and March due to the seasonality of equine work. Exceptions will be considered in special circumstances.

Externship Duration: April-October (Busy Season)

Externship Duration: November-March (Slow Season)

Externship Details & Duties:

  • On-site accommodation available
  • Externship length: minimum of 2 weeks
  • Time will be divided between hospital and field service
  • Assistance on field emergencies
  • Hands on veterinary experience
  • Assistance with overnight treatments and patient care
