Since the roots of the upper teeth live in close proximity to the sinuses, it is not unusual to have nasal discharge as a result of an infected tooth. This is a problem that in most situations will require the extraction of the affected tooth.
Other serious dental conditions can develop, such as infections of the teeth and gums, extremely long hooks on the molars, lost or fractured teeth, and others. These conditions may require surgical treatment and/or extraction by a veterinarian.
An appropriate dental examination program is the best way to minimize more serious dental problems from occurring.
